一萬多年前，厚約1.6公里的冰開始融化，流進了大西洋。海水淹沒冰川中的大山谷和佛蒙特州內陸綠意盎然的山丘。而名叫夏洛特（Charlotte）的白鯨正住在這片汪洋中，卻意外受困於內陸無法逃出，最終在河口淺灘上死去。牠乳白色的光滑皮膚隨著時間開始腐化，遺骸最終埋葬於地底深處。

直到1849年，佛蒙特州的人因為修建鐵路而挖掘地下時，發現了夏洛特的美麗骨骸。科學家路易斯．阿加西茲（Louis Agassiz）與自然學家們一同辨別骨頭的主人。經過研究和查證，發現這是被稱為「海中金絲雀」的白鯨遺骸。

夏洛特為何會在河中死亡？沼澤是如何演變成田野？牠的化石向人類闡述了變化多端的地球，以及生命的脆弱。書末附有關於佛蒙特州和其他冰河時代生物的相關知識。
