Letterforms surround us: inscriptions or names on buildings, directional signs for road networks or within and around buildings. This book focuses on the letterforms and typography found in public places which help us to navi-gate towns, cities and countryside and which contribute to sense of place. Featuring examples from around the world, the book discusses the function and execution of signage, concentrating on the intentional rather than on the accidental or temporary.

Visually led, Signs contains over 700 Colour images grouped thematically and described in extended captions. The best current examples are shown alongside historcal material. ● 作者簡介

Phil Baines is a senior lecturer in typography at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design and co-curator of the Central designer he has created typefaces for Fuse and designs for Matt's Gallery and Phaidon Press. He is a frequent contributor to the quarterly graphic design magazine Eye.

Catherine Dixon is a designer and writer as well as a visiting tutor in typography at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design and co-curator of the Central Lettering Record. Her PhD work on typeface description is featured in Type &typography by Phil Baines & Andrew Haslam.
