在人類歷史上，地球正面對一個無法預期的環境危機，隨著地球氣候急劇轉變，導致地球地質演化的新時代出現，有學者對此影響深遠的變化提出一個全新的地質時代，稱之為「人類世」（Anthropocene）。

人類造成的改變影響著每個存活在地球的其他物種，在《人類世的誕生》（The Birth of the Anthropocene）一書中，作者Jeremy Davies就這概念敘述兩個很重要的事實：二氧化碳已到達三百萬年來未曾見過的高水平；自恐龍時期最大規模的滅絕似乎正在進行中。
