近來關於「發展」的論辯經常圍繞著貧富差距擴大、環境問題等批判，發展經濟學家Steven Radelet以縝密的調查資料回顧一百多個發展中國家近數十年的演進，提出有別於遍行悲觀論調、鮮少被述說的另一方論證：針對全球貧窮地區，人類如何已經減少貧困、提升所得、增進衛生健康、抑制暴力、推廣民主，以及如何將改善的步伐繼續下去。
