My son Gabriel, who has Down Syndrome and autism, learned to speak and sign as a toddler, but over the ensuing years his words and signs gradually disappeared.
The last time anyone heard him speak, he was six and a half.
At the age of nine he developed a sleeping disorder and we were up most nights for the next two years and beyond.
In the absence of speech and sleep, however, came a love for jazz. Gabriel, who loves music of all kinds, appreciates the sounds of Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and many other jazz greats.
While Gabriel was developing his passion for jazz, I became interested in polar exploration, especially Antarctic journeys. I read, Alone, the story of Richard Byrd’s 1934 attempt to stay by himself in a hut imbedded in the ice for six months. He made it for four months before he had to be rescued by his men.
Know the Night is a combination of Gabriel, jazz, Antarctica and other elements that speak to isolation and connection, and finding your way in the dark.
