A retelling of the curious life of plastic, from the dizzying heights of tupperware and celluloid to the murky depths of microplastics and hyperdisposability
Plastic is bad. Plastic is evil. Plastic is dangerous. This is the rhetoric we’re familiar with. And yet, there was a time when plastic was synonymous with innovation, sparkling a material revolution that wove its way into every corner of our lives from clothes and devices to buildings and medical systems. It was the miracle material – until suddenly, it wasn’t.
So, how did ‘plastic’ become a byword for everything that feels wrong in the world? Why did we turn our backs on a material that has saved more lives than any other? Why do we so vehemently shun a material that continues to make our modern lives possible, bearable, better?
For better or for worse, we live in an age of plastic. It’s time to rebuild our understanding of this remarkable group of materials from the ground up. Join materials scientist Anna Ploszajski as she charts the rise and fall of the material that made the modern world.
