In 1977, Voyagers 1 and 2 were launched into space. Since they left earth, these two probes have travelled billions of miles, the only human-made objects to have entered interstellar space. With each of them, speeding ever farther from our world, is a copy of The Golden Record.

The Golden Record is the ultimate time capsule, a record of life on earth, safeguarded against the possibility that they encounter intelligent beings. The phonographs contain etchings of radio waves, human anatomy, the structure of DNA, maps, photographs, music and spoken greetings from around the world, the sound of children laughing and a brainwave of a woman thinking about love.

Fifty years after the Voyager launch, Jon Lomberg, the design director of the Golden Records, NASA historian Glen Swanson, and Space Anthropologist Deana Weibel offer a record of the Golden Record, recounting and reflecting on a moment that many consider being the pinnacle of human ambition.

Jon Lomberg is the principal artistic collaborator of Carl Sagan and Design Director of the core team that curated The Golden Record at NASA. He co-authored Murmurs of Earth (alongside Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan), and continued to collaborate with Sagan on Cosmos, Contact, and The Cosmic Connection.

Glen Swanson is a historian of space exploration and former Chief Historian of NASA’s Johnson Space Centre. He led the digitization of the Apollo mission transcript, and has served as a consultant to astronauts, authors and filmmakers alike.

Deana Weibel is Professor of Anthropology at Grand Valley State University, where her work focuses on the intersection of culture and scientific study.
