One bear’s unfinished journey opened a path between wilderness and humanity
When Formosan Black Bear 568 was trapped and killed, its fate shook Taiwan. Over 25 days, the bear crossed mountains and ridges in a desperate journey home—only to reveal the fractures between humans and nature, Indigenous traditions and state power, compassion and fear.
Through rare interviews with conservationists, villagers, and the hunters themselves, veteran journalist Hui-Ping Tsai delivers a gripping, unprecedented account of a single bear’s death that became a mirror for society.
A powerful story of loss, reckoning, and the urgent question: how can humans and wildlife truly coexist?
