自2008年出現全球經濟危機開始，關於這個議題的發表文章與出版著作多到不甚枚舉，當中又多是著眼於經濟層面、美國政策和心理角度，唯有知名學者David Harvey撰寫的《The Enigma of Capital》一書，將目前的經濟危機置於長遠的歷史背景中進行考察，闡述金融體系的根本問題源自於資本主義，以及資本主義逐步壯大進而主導世界的具體過程、資本主義導致當前金融危機的主因。

300年來，資本主義制度塑造了西方社會，培育了它們一代代的統治者，並且改變了西方人的生活方式。作者在書中將資本主義下形成的國際金融體系的漏洞展露無遺，深刻剖析資本主義的本質和運作方式，以及週期性運作失靈的原因。

他研究全球範圍內不斷流動、洶湧起伏的現金流，那些虛假指數顯示出每日貨幣流量大大超過整個經濟體系的實質貨幣總額。他觀察了全球房市和股市的繁榮與蕭條週期，並且指出週期性的經濟蕭條不僅在資本主義體制中不可避免，還是資本主義得以存在下去的不可或缺的條件，足以顯示資本主義的運作完全是一種「道德缺失」。

在書末，作者亦提出在資本主義的框架內如何盡可能遏制當今類似危機的發展，呼籲建立一種新社會秩序，使得我們生活在一個負責、公正、人道的制度。

David Harvey 現任紐約城市大學研究所的人類學「傑出教授」。他曾在約翰霍普金斯大學和牛津大學擔任地理學教授。曾於1995年獲得英國皇家地理學會頒發「贊助人獎章」金獎，並於2007年當選美國文理科學院院士。他的著作有《A Companion to Marx’s Capital》、《Limits to Capital》、《Social Justice and the City》、《Spaces of Global Capitalism》、《The New Imperialism》和《Paris, Capital of Modernity》等。
