Michael Abrashoff graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and served as an officer in the U.S. Navy for nearly twenty years, He was a military assistant to the for-mer secretary of defense William J. Perry. As captain of the$ 1 billion warship USS Benfold, Abrashoff increased the retention rate among his crew from 28 percent to 100 percent, reduced the ship's operating expenditures, and dramatically improved its readiness. Abrashoff left the navy in 2001 and became the founder and CEO of Grass-roots Leadership, Inc., in Arlington, Virginia.
