35-year-old Ursula Becker, Vice President of Strategic Audacity at a branding agency in Manhattan, is successful, witty, whip-smart and single. She’s tried all the dating apps, and let’s just say: it has not gone well. You’d think—Ursula Becker would certainly think—by now someone would have come up with something more bespoke, a way for users to be more tailored about who and what they want in a life partner. Frankly, as she tells her best friend Issa in the Purple Rain room of the women’s club The Stake after yet another failed date, she’s decided to give up on the pursuit altogether.

Until, out of the lavender mist appears a beautiful, confident, mysterious woman who somehow manages to procure and present Ursula a perfectly pristine business card in the midst of a steam room, before promptly disappearing. “thearc.com” it reads on one side. On the other: “Be more specific.”

Upon further investigation, Ursula discovers that The Arc is a highly secretive, referral-only matchmaking service that uses a complex, intense, week-long series of emotional, psychological and physiological assessments to aid its clients in finding their ideal mates. The price tag is high, the promise ambitious. Explains Dr. Vidal, The Arc’s Founder and Chief Relationship Architect: “We formulate a level of compatibility that you, as an individual, would never be able to achieve for yourself.”

Ursula is paired with 42-year-old estate lawyer Rafael Banks. From moment one, this indeed feels like the electric, lasting love they’ve sought their whole adult lives. But as their relationship unfolds in unanticipated ways, the two begin to question The Arc’s legitimacy. And though they fight to establish the relationship on their own terms, their confidence in it and each other begins to unravel. And yet: The Arc looms large.

Is it really possible to optimize love? THE ARC is a timely, diverting look at modern romance, and the mystery of love itself. With astute cultural commentary, Henwood Hoen also brilliantly lampoons fourth-wave feminism and start-up culture. The perfect escape from quarantine life, you will find it impossible to put this book down—I certainly could not.
