In the tradition of THE REVENANT, Michael Punke’s new novel THE RIDGELINE is the page-turning fictional account of a little-known but deeply significant incident in the history of the American West.

“The full story of what happened in that brief hour of bloody carnage at high noon under the wintry sky of December 21, 1866, will never be known.” –Dee Brown

On December 21st, 1866, eighty-one US soldiers rode out of Montana’s Fort Phil Kearney in the midst of a blizzard, pursuing a small band of Indians. Ignoring direct orders, the officers led the men over a distant ridgeline they had been told not to cross. On the other side of the hilltop, which would come to be known as "Massacre Ridge," the soldiers fell headlong into a trap set by two thousand Sioux and Cheyenne warriors. Less than an hour later all eighty-one soldiers who rode from Fort Phil Kearney that day lay dead, the worst massacre in US military history up to that point. Hewing closely to recorded history, THE RIDGELINE tells the dramatic story of the multiple failures of leadership that led these eighty-one men to their deaths, featuring real characters such as young Crazy Horse and legendary chief Red Cloud, as they grapple with the battle of their lives in a time of epochal change.
