● 內文簡介

In the middle of the night, in a cold remote farmhouse in 1963, Joy Henderson listens to slow deliberate footsteps that are followed by screams that escape into the black air. Then the footsteps again, this time making their way to where she is lying, naked and silent. Her time has come. Just as her father said it would.

Twenty years later, Joy returns to the farmhouse to nurse her dying father George, the much-loved, upstanding pillar of the community and church. She’s planned everything – right down to the death notice for the local paper and the lemon slice for the wake. But her older sister Ruth (disabled in an accident before Joy was born) turns up unexpectedly and whispers dark words urging Joy to exact the ultimate revenge for both of them. Dark words that infiltrate Joy’s mind and torment her when she sleeps. When Joy finds their father apparently murdered with his belt pulled tight around his neck, local police officer, Alan Shepherd, swings into action. But as seemingly impossible facts about Joy’s family surface, Shepherd can’t work out when Joy is telling the truth and when she is pulling him into an elaborate web of lies. Nor can he admit that the truth might compel him to go against everything he believes and let a murderer walk free.

Intertwined with this 1983 narrative are two other narrative threads – one set in the 1940s that traces George’s psychological and then physical abuse of his new wife as poverty and despair take over their lives…and another set in 1960 when Joy, who lives in fear of her violent and pious father, finds comfort in her wild imagination…and when nine-year-old Wendy Boscombe disappears from a neighbouring farm.

As events from each era unfold, readers discover that Ruth died before she was born, but survives in Joy’s imagination as her alter ego who encourages her to do things she would never have the courage to do – and that her death was the result of George pushing his pregnant wife down the back steps.
