WHAT DOES AN ACTION STAR DO WHEN HE LOSES HIS MOJO?

After a couple of notable box-office bombs, a former megastar of a ction flicks finds his career has taken a downturn. The spectacular breakup of his recent romance with a high-society wild child (a drunken fight, a Hummer that drives off Mulholland, a recently fired gun in the glove compartment) has become irresistible fodder for the tabloids. His agent's holiday gift to him is a sweater, not a Porsche, and he is relegated to the B-list for the Vanity Fair Oscar party. Haunted by the specter of three little words-“straight to video”-he heeds the sage advice of his personal chef/nutritionist, Lucinda, and embarks on a jour-ney to rediscover the man he was before he became Mr. Famous and reinvent himself as a Hollywood player with integrity.

Meanwhile, Lucinda has issues of her own. As if being an industry outsider in an industry town weren't enough to give a competent woman a complex, it now seems that she has that least coveted of Tinseltown accessories: a stalker. Her troubles dovetail with the advent of Mr. Famous's mourning period for the star he used to be, and so he invites her to join him in seclusion in “the bunker,” his Bel Air mansion. Lucinda enters as the steady stream of a movie star's retinue retreats-the exes, girlfriends, offspring, agents, managers, lawyers, studio execs, assistants, therapists, acupuncturists, manicurists, yoga teachers, personal trainers, flacks, and fans who make it past the security gate.

When Mr. Famous is ready to emerge, he and Lucinda travel to Cape Cod , to try to find the for-mer self he left behind. He soon learns that, even incognito, the local boy who became a star cannot undo his fame, though the trip does awaken enough memories of previous life to give him the determination to go West with some Yankee working-class grit. But back in the insanity of L.A. , Can he withstand the temptations that celebrity throws in his path-the girls, the vanity, the cards-and remain true enough to his newly discovered inner life to begin Chapter Two on his own terms?

As she did in her national bestseller The Cigarette Girl, Carol Wolper captures her Holly-wood” creations” in just a few brushstrokes, with aching clarity and a dollop of compassion. Mr Famous is a funny and insightful novel about how to survive celebrity with your dignity intact.
