A small group of colonists left Earth to create a peaceful agricultural settlement on a distant planet they named Pax. But they made a terrible mistake. Fruit suddenly turns poisonous and crops begin to die. They've landed in the middle of a vast war – a war between plants, because on this planet, plants are the dominant species. Animals are their weapons. And now that includes the colonists.

Worse, someone may have tried and failed to colonize Pax before. Some animals and plants have been domesticated, and someone built a beautiful city – but who did it, and where are they now? Generation by generation, the colonists find answers to these questions, and each step brings them closer to disaster.

Sue Burke has worked as a reporter and editor for a variety of newspapers and magazines, and Semiosis is her debut novel. She is a Clarion workshop alumnus and has published over thirty short stories. Burke also worked extensively as a literary translator, and while living in Madrid, Spain, she headed the long-running Madrid Writer’s Critique Group. She now lives in Chicago.
