No Heaven for Good Boys is one of the strongest debuts. It tracks two boys, first cousins, sent from the safety of their home villages in rural Senegal to Dakar to study Islam. A traditional arrangement, the boys are called Talibe (TAL-uh-BAY) and their teachers are called Marabout (MAIR-uh-BOO). After the economy crashed in Senegal in 2008, however, Marabout notoriously began forcing their pupils to beg while neglecting their most basic needs.

Ibrihimah, the young protagonist, has a kindness and commitment to survival that is rooted in his intense longing to return to his mother, who is fighting desperately to get her boy home. Just when it looks like everything is lost and no one will ever be safe again, just when tragedy strikes, Ibrihimah displays an almost magical knack for inspiring kindness, fierce hope, and lucky breaks.

On a publicity note, the real boys that these characters are based upon, often join groups like ISIS, Boku Haram and al Qaeda after their stays with their Marabout as they are too ashamed to return home.
