故事開始於80年代美國雷根總統當政的年代。剛自哥倫比亞大學MBA畢業的華倫（Warren Hament），脫掉畢業服後，便順利投身金融行業，進入華爾街最頂級的投資銀行Weldon Brothers。起初，他對同僚滿腦子處心積慮賺錢的自私自利頗不認同，不隨波逐流地靠自己的努力奮鬥著，憑藉自己的靈活、聰明、善於溝通，讓他迅速升官，賺到人生的第一桶金，並認識一位美豔動人、充滿野心的女朋友。華倫在華爾街的事業一帆風順，然而一天，在工作上提攜指導他的良師益友遭人謀殺了。華倫深感悲傷的同時，卻未察覺危機已降臨他頭上。

華倫很快從一位交易場的天真新手，成長成一位狡猾的操控者，專門負責商業的巨額買賣。他發現同僚的眾多生財之道，像是靠垃圾債券（Junk Bond：未正式成立公司為籌措資金發行的高風低價債券）買賣，手法熟練地抬高公司股價，還有讓美國經濟一步步走向崩潰的按揭證券等，這也讓華倫與他的伙伴賺取最大利潤。但是隨著另一宗謀殺案的發生，華倫突然發現自己成為最大嫌疑犯之一，遭到紐約警察廳調查。

小說中，謀殺只是情節進展的結果，而真正的伏筆在於華爾街的巨額非法交易。華倫是四位因死者去世而能在投資獲利的既得利益者之一。他身陷絕境、進退兩難的不利局勢，也曝曬了華爾街人的不擇手段、自私自利的投機取巧。

本故事情節極為引人入勝，是一本具有警世意味的小說，亦揭露了華爾街的真實面貌。

 

Mike Offit，從布朗大學畢業後，即投身華爾街金融界，放棄了廣告行業。他最後也放棄哥倫比亞大學MBA，迷戀紙醉金迷的華爾街。他很快成為高盛（Goldman Sachs）的資深交易員，隨後在瑞信（First Boston）和保誠（Prudential）的抵押和擔保證券主管，並被德意志銀行（Deutsche Bank）高薪聘任為總經理。退休後，他成為專欄作家，也是高品味雜誌《Departures》特約編輯。現在與妻子和兩個孩子住在紐約。
